Only three hours’ drive from Helsinki, the capital of Finland, the construction of one of Europe’s biggest nuclear power reactors TVO OL3 is well-advanced. When the reactor is completed in 2011 it will produce an energy output of about 1,600 MW.
Review of cathodic protection system FORCE Technology’s Department of Concrete has been chosen to carry out a critical review of the cathodic protection system for the cooling water channels of OL3, the third and latest reactor.
Moreover FORCE Technology has installed various probes for the surveillance of the durability of the cooling water channels’ concrete protection. Concurrently the probes must check the efficiency of the cathodic protection.
The corrosion monitoring system consists of two different probes: The ERE 20 reference electrode, which registers the efficiency of the cathodic protection, and the CorroWatch multiprobe, which predicts the initial stages of corrosion in the covering layer. By means of these two probes it is possible to plan the maintenance work and ensure continued operation of the plant.
Both probes have been developed by FORCE Technology and have been tested in many different concrete structures for several years.
